The Long Island Airport Transfer Guide: JFK, LGA, and EWR
Long Island has three major airports within reach: JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark Liberty. Each one has a different character, different traffic patterns, and a different ideal window for departure. This guide gives you the practical information you need to make every airport transfer smooth.
JFK International Airport
Distance from Long Island: 20–55 miles depending on your town
Typical travel time: 45 minutes (off-peak) to 90+ minutes (rush hour)
Best for: International flights, American, Delta, and most major carriers
JFK is the primary choice for most Long Island travelers. It's accessible via the Belt Parkway, the Van Wyck Expressway, and the Southern State.
Timing Recommendations
| Departure Zone | Recommended Departure | |---|---| | Nassau County (Great Neck, Manhasset) | 60–75 min before recommended airport arrival | | Central Nassau (Syosset, Garden City) | 70–85 min | | Western Suffolk (Dix Hills, Melville) | 80–100 min | | Eastern Suffolk / Hamptons | 90–120 min |
For international flights requiring 3-hour pre-arrival, add these buffers on top. Always err on the side of early.
Terminal Drop-Off
JFK has 8 active terminals. Your car service should know your terminal before arriving. Always confirm your terminal when you book — not all airlines use the same one consistently (Delta, for example, has split between T2 and T4 depending on the route).
LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
Distance from Long Island: 15–35 miles
Typical travel time: 35 minutes (off-peak) to 75 minutes (rush hour)
Best for: Domestic flights, shorter trips, travelers from Nassau County
LaGuardia is the closest option for much of Nassau County, and its recently renovated terminals (the new Concourse B and the Delta terminals) have dramatically improved the experience. It's often the fastest option when traffic cooperates.
Timing Recommendations
LGA sits at the edge of Queens, which means the Grand Central Parkway and Northern State are your primary routes. They're efficient in light traffic but can slow dramatically during morning rush.
- Off-peak: Allow 45–55 minutes from Great Neck or Manhasset
- Peak hours (7–9 AM, 4–7 PM): Allow 70–90 minutes
What's Changed at LGA
The new Terminal B (opened 2022) is a significant upgrade. Clear signage, modern drop-off infrastructure, and much shorter security lines in certain areas. Your driver should know the difference between the arrivals and departures levels — the old LGA layouts confused even experienced drivers.
Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR)
Distance from Long Island: 40–70 miles
Typical travel time: 60–100 minutes
Best for: Continental, United, international flights, travelers who want to avoid JFK traffic
EWR is often overlooked by Long Island travelers, but it's worth considering — especially on United Airlines routes and transatlantic flights. The airport is less congested than JFK, check-in lines tend to move faster, and the AirTrain connection to NJ Transit is excellent if you're returning without a car service.
The trade-off is distance. Getting to Newark from deep Suffolk County is a significant commitment, and toll costs (the Goethals Bridge or Bayonne Bridge) add to the trip.
When EWR Makes Sense
- You're flying United, Lufthansa, or another carrier with a primary Newark hub
- Your home is in western Nassau County (reduces the distance penalty)
- You're traveling outside of peak hours
- JFK is experiencing significant delays or construction closures
General Tips for Smooth Airport Transfers
Book 24–48 hours in advance. For early morning pickups (4–6 AM), aim for 3–5 days ahead — those slots fill up, especially on Mondays and Fridays.
Confirm your flight terminal when you book. Your driver prepares for the specific terminal, not just the airport.
Communicate flight changes immediately. If your flight time shifts even 30 minutes, let your car service know. A good service monitors your flight anyway, but it's always faster when you're in the loop.
Travel light when possible. For domestic travel especially, a carry-on and personal item skips baggage claim entirely — and means faster loading on both ends.
Have your driver meet you curbside, not inside. On the departure side, curbside drop-off is almost always faster than a garage or remote lot. On the arrival side, ask about curbside pickup vs. cell phone lot waiting — your driver should be flexible.
