Jones Beach Air Show 2026: Navy Blue Angels This Sunday — What You Need to Know About Getting There

The Jones Beach Air Show is this weekend — Sunday July 5 and Monday July 6 — and this year's show is different from any in recent memory.

The FourLeaf Air Show has traditionally run on Memorial Day weekend. This year it moved to July 4th weekend as part of America's 250th anniversary celebration. The headliner is the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, who are returning to Jones Beach for the first time in years. They're joined by the U.S. Army Golden Knights parachute team, the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, the Royal Air Force Red Arrows (their first appearance at this show), and the NY Air National Guard.

If you've been to the Jones Beach Air Show before, you already know the transportation situation. If you haven't: the parking fills up faster than most people expect, and the traffic getting out is its own event.

The Parking Reality

Admission to the show is free. Parking is $10 per car. Both of those facts drive an enormous crowd — because when something is free, everyone brings everyone.

Parking lots at Jones Beach open at sunrise. On a normal air show weekend, the lots reach capacity by 8am. This year, with the Blue Angels on the bill and a national holiday weekend, plan for that window to close even earlier. Once the lots fill, the Wantagh State Parkway and Meadowbrook State Parkway southbound can get shut down to incoming traffic.

If you are driving and you want guaranteed parking, you need to be in the car and moving by 6:30am. That is not an exaggeration. It means getting kids up, packed, and in the car before 7am on a Sunday. For a lot of families, that's the hardest part of the whole day.

The show runs 10am to 3pm. The Blue Angels typically fly toward the end of the program. If you arrive at 9:30am, you'll make it — if the roads are still open.

Public Transit: LIRR + Bus

The MTA runs LIRR service to Jones Beach via the Babylon Branch. Take any Babylon Branch train to Freeport Station, then transfer to the NICE n88 bus, which runs directly to the beach and stops at the West Bathhouse, Central Mall, and East Bathhouse. The N88X express version is also available during peak times.

This is a legitimate option for families coming from Nassau County or anyone along the Babylon Branch corridor. The train doesn't care about Meadowbrook Parkway backups. The bus leg takes 20–30 minutes depending on traffic on the causeway.

One note: LIRR trains don't stop at Freeport on every run. Check the TrainTime app before you go and specifically look for trains that include a Freeport stop. Missing that stop and having to double back costs you an hour.

Passenger Drop-Off

The designated drop-off point for passengers is at the West Bathhouse on the western end of Jones Beach. If you're coming by car service, rideshare, or having someone drive you, that's where you go.

On a normal beach day, drop-offs here are quick. On air show weekend with hundreds of thousands of people, traffic on the Ocean Parkway and the access roads leading to Jones Beach can back up significantly. Budget extra time getting in, and coordinate your pickup for after the crowd disperses — the 3pm show end means everyone leaves at the same time.

The Getting-Out Problem

The worst part of the Jones Beach Air Show is always the exit. When 150,000 to 200,000 people all leave a single barrier island via two state parkways at the same time, the backup stretches for miles. The Wantagh Parkway and Meadowbrook Parkway northbound after a show can hold you for 90 minutes to two hours.

If you stay a little later — walk the boardwalk, get food, let the first wave of traffic clear — the roads move considerably faster by 4:30 or 5pm. This is worth knowing if you have any flexibility.

Why This Year Is Different From Past Years

July 4th weekend at Jones Beach is typically already one of the busiest days of the year. The fireworks on Saturday night July 4th will draw a separate crowd. Then Sunday and Monday bring the air show. The barrier island will be operating at or near capacity for three consecutive days.

The Army Golden Knights are doing their 20th appearance at this show. The Royal Air Force Red Arrows have never performed here before — that's a real draw for aviation fans who follow these things. And the Blue Angels headlining the national 250th anniversary celebration means this show has more profile than any Jones Beach air show in years.

There will be more people here than on a typical Memorial Day weekend air show. Plan accordingly.

What to Bring, What to Expect

  • Arrive early or don't drive. The two options that actually work.
  • No chairs inside the show perimeter — spectators watch from the beach. Bring a blanket.
  • Sunscreen. Three hours on the beach in early July with no shade is no joke.
  • Kites are prohibited — they're a hazard to performers. Leave them home.
  • Pets are not permitted at the show.
  • Show runs 10am to 3pm both days. Practice flights Friday July 3.

Booking a Car Service for the Air Show

If you're taking a group — family with kids, a few couples, anyone who doesn't want to deal with parking logistics on July 4th weekend — a private car service is the cleanest way to handle it. We drop you at the West Bathhouse, and when you're ready to leave, we coordinate pickup so you're not standing on the curb waiting.

We've done hundreds of Jones Beach runs over the years. We know what the Wantagh and Meadowbrook look like on a show day and how to time the pickup to avoid the worst of the exit traffic.
