Memorial Day Weekend 2026: Airport Transfers, Hamptons Traffic, and Why This Weekend Is Different
Memorial Day weekend is the single biggest travel weekend of the spring — and for Long Island, it hits differently than anywhere else. You've got millions of people pushing through JFK and LGA while simultaneously, the Sunrise Highway and Montauk Highway are turning into parking lots heading east. Two completely separate travel nightmares happening at the same time, in the same corner of the map.
I've been doing airport transfers and Hamptons runs on Memorial Day weekend for over 20 years. Every year the volume climbs. And this year, with JFK in the middle of the largest reconstruction in its history, the logistics around the airports are more complicated than they've been in a long time.
Here's what to actually expect, and how to plan around it.
The Airport Side: JFK and LGA Are Going to Be Busy
TSA projects over 2.9 million passengers through U.S. checkpoints on Thursday May 21 and Friday May 22 alone. Those are the peak departure days before the long weekend. JFK is always the pressure point for Long Island travelers, and LGA is running roughly 10% above a typical weekend.
If you're flying out Thursday or Friday, you need to build in more buffer than you think.
JFK Construction Is Making Curbside Worse
JFK's terminal overhaul is ongoing and the road logistics around the airport reflect it. Terminal access roads are compressed. Pickup and drop-off zones are rerouted. What used to be a straightforward Departures pull-up at Terminal 1, 4, 5, or 8 now involves construction detours that change week to week.
Rideshare drivers get caught in this constantly. They're following GPS instructions from an app that doesn't account for live construction closures, and they end up circling while your flight window is ticking down. A driver who goes to JFK regularly knows which approach actually works on a given day and which one is a dead end.
The Van Wyck on a Friday Before Memorial Day
Thursday May 21 and Friday May 22 on the Van Wyck are a different situation than a normal Friday. Traffic heading southbound toward JFK starts building by 11am and doesn't clear until late at night. The Belt Parkway backup from the Cross Island down to the airport can add 30 to 45 minutes to a trip that normally takes 15.
If your flight is before noon, you're in decent shape if you leave early. If your flight is between 1pm and 6pm on Friday, you need to talk to someone who knows how to read that corridor in real time — not someone who set a pickup time based on Google Maps the night before.
From a typical Nassau County town like Garden City or Mineola, a JFK run that normally takes 40 minutes can run 75 to 90 minutes on a Friday afternoon before Memorial Day. From Huntington or Melville in Suffolk, you can add another 20 minutes on top of that.
Uber Surge Pricing at JFK on Holiday Mornings
The 5am and 6am crowd heading to JFK on Friday of Memorial Day weekend is where rideshare surge pricing gets ugly. We're talking 2x to 3x normal fares at the departure curb. That's $80 turning into $200 before you've even started your trip — and with no guarantee the driver knows the Terminal 4 construction detour from the Terminal 8 approach.
With a car service from Long Island, the price is set when you book. It doesn't change at 4:45am because an algorithm decided the airport is busy.
The Hamptons Side: Memorial Day Friday Is a Different Animal
Memorial Day weekend is when the Hamptons officially opens for the season. Every rental property from Westhampton to Montauk is booked. The restaurants, the clubs, the boat slips — all of it. And every person who rented something is trying to get there on Friday afternoon.
The Sunrise Highway heading east from Nassau into Suffolk, and then the Montauk Highway through Southampton and East Hampton, is genuinely gridlocked from roughly 2pm to 9pm on Memorial Day Friday. There are years when the drive from the city or from western Long Island to East Hampton takes four or five hours.
What Most People Get Wrong
Most people driving themselves to the Hamptons on Memorial Day Friday lose the whole afternoon sitting in traffic. They're checking Waze every 20 minutes, cutting through side streets in Riverhead that everyone else on Waze is also cutting through, and arriving at the rental house exhausted at 9pm instead of relaxed at 6pm.
A good driver who runs this corridor regularly knows the timing windows and the alternates. The Sunrise Highway is only one option. There are routes through the North Fork that don't show up on a consumer GPS app as the obvious choice but work well when the Montauk Highway is locked. The key is knowing when to use them and when you're better off waiting.
Corporate Clients Using the Hamptons for Client Entertainment
Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial start of Hamptons corporate entertainment season. If you're bringing clients out to a property in Southampton or Bridgehampton, the vehicle and the experience matter. An Escalade with a professional chauffeur who can navigate the routes without drama is a different statement than five people piled into a rideshare that's 25 minutes late and can't find the address.
Return Travel: Monday May 25
The flip side of the Memorial Day rush is Monday return travel. Peak return through JFK is Monday afternoon and evening, May 25. If your return flight is between noon and 8pm, expect the same Van Wyck and Belt Parkway backups in reverse.
For Hamptons clients driving back to Long Island on Monday, the Sunrise Highway westbound is heavy from early morning through mid-afternoon. If you can leave before 10am or after 4pm, the ride is significantly better.
Flight Tracking Matters on Return Days
Return travel is where flight tracking makes a real difference. Incoming flights on a busy holiday Monday get delayed, gates change, and baggage claim times shift. I track every pickup in real time. If your flight lands 40 minutes late, I know before you land. You're not standing at baggage claim texting someone trying to figure out where the car is.
Booking: Don't Wait on This One
Memorial Day is not a weekend to book last minute. Reliable JFK car service from Long Island fills up two to three weeks out for the peak departure windows — Thursday evening, Friday morning, and Friday afternoon. Hamptons runs for Memorial Day Friday go even faster.
If you're traveling May 21 through May 25 and you haven't sorted out transportation yet, now is the right time.
There's no surge pricing, no algorithm, no driver who cancels at 4am because they found a better fare. The car is confirmed. The driver has run this route before. And whether you're heading to JFK Terminal 5 for an early flight or getting dropped off in East Hampton for the weekend, the timing is handled.
