Best Things To Do in NYC This Weekend — April 4–5, 2026
Easter weekend in New York is one of the busiest stretches of the year. Fifth Avenue shuts down. Midtown fills with tourists. MSG has two home games. UBS Arena has a sold-out comedy show. And Broadway is running full Saturday and Sunday matinees.
If you are coming in from Long Island this weekend, here is what is happening and what you need to know about getting there.
Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival
Sunday, April 5 — 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM Fifth Avenue, 49th Street to 57th Street — Free
This is the one that changes everything about midtown Manhattan on Sunday. The Easter Parade is not a ticketed event — it is a free, open street celebration that has run along Fifth Avenue for more than 150 years. People come from all over the tri-state area. Hundreds of thousands of them.
Fifth Avenue is closed to vehicles from 49th to 57th Street for the full six-hour stretch. The blocks around St. Patrick's Cathedral are standing-room only. The foot traffic spills out into the surrounding streets, and the entire midtown grid slows to a crawl from late morning into the afternoon.
If you are planning to go, do not plan to drive to midtown and park. There is nothing to park. The garages that are open will charge event-day rates and fill up early. The cross streets around Fifth Avenue will be gridlocked.
We drop clients at the 48th Street side and coordinate a pickup window at the end of the afternoon, wherever they land. If you have the Easter Parade and anything else on Sunday — Rangers at 7pm, a Broadway matinee, dinner in midtown — you need a plan that does not involve moving your car between events.
New York Rangers vs. Detroit Red Wings at MSG
Saturday, April 4 — 12:30 PM Madison Square Garden, Seventh Avenue and 32nd Street
The Rangers open the weekend with a Saturday afternoon home game against Detroit. A noon start at MSG is one of the better ways to spend an April Saturday — you are back in time for dinner, and the midtown crowds are generally thinner before the afternoon rush kicks in.
"Generally" is doing some work in that sentence. The blocks around MSG on a Saturday game day still back up on Seventh and Eighth Avenue, and Penn Station is a chaotic place to try to navigate in a hurry. If you are coming from Nassau or Suffolk with the intention of getting dropped at the arena entrance and skipping the whole parking arithmetic — that is exactly what we handle.
The Rangers are in a playoff push. These late-season home games draw serious crowds. Give yourself time.
New York Rangers vs. Washington Capitals at MSG
Sunday, April 5 — 7:00 PM Madison Square Garden, Seventh Avenue and 32nd Street
Back-to-back Rangers home games in the same weekend, with the Capitals visiting Sunday night. A 7pm start on Easter Sunday is a different beast than Saturday afternoon. The city has been running all day — Easter brunch crowds, the parade, families making a full day of it. By 7pm, midtown is still busy, and Penn Station is moving at the pace of a holiday weekend, not a regular Sunday.
If you did the parade during the day and you want to close out the weekend with a Rangers game, a car handles the logistics between those two things in a way that three separate Ubers and two parking debates do not.
Broadway: Dog Day Afternoon and Hamilton
Saturday, April 4 and Sunday, April 5
Two Broadway shows worth planning around this weekend.
Dog Day Afternoon opens its Saturday matinee at 1:00 PM at the August Wilson Theatre on West 52nd Street. The stage production of Sidney Lumet's 1975 film has generated serious attention since it arrived on Broadway, and a Saturday afternoon performance is one of the more civilized ways to do the theater district — you are in before the lunch rush clears and out before the evening crowd arrives.
Hamilton runs a Sunday matinee at 1:00 PM at the Richard Rodgers Theatre on West 46th Street. If you have never seen it or if you have seen it and want to go again — Sunday afternoon on Easter weekend at one of the best shows in Broadway history is not a bad way to spend the day before the Rangers game.
The theater district on weekends concentrates a lot of drop-offs and pickups in a small area. We know which block works for which venue. If you have two people going to two different shows, that is a coordination problem we solve without you having to think about it.
Jo Koy at UBS Arena
Sunday, April 5 — 7:00 PM UBS Arena, Elmont Tickets: $69–$199
Jo Koy has a show on Sunday night at UBS Arena in Elmont — and unlike the Manhattan events above, this one is genuinely on Long Island. Which makes it the easiest trip geographically, but do not let that fool you about the logistics.
UBS Arena holds nearly 19,000 people. When it empties after a 7pm show, the roads around Hempstead Turnpike and the Belmont Park area back up fast. The parking situation on site is manageable before the show. After the show, getting out of the lot is a different story.
If you are coming from Nassau County, a drop-off at the arena entrance and a pickup after the show is a much cleaner night than trying to time the parking lot exit with 18,000 other people. And for anyone coming from eastern Suffolk, the calculation is even clearer — UBS Arena is easier to reach than midtown, but it is still worth doing properly.
Getting Around This Weekend
Easter weekend is one of the highest-traffic holiday weekends in the metro area. A few things to know:
The Van Wyck heading toward JFK on Saturday and Sunday will be busy — Easter travel is a real surge window for the airports, and that backs up into the surrounding roads.
The LIE westbound on Sunday afternoon, as people head back to the city from weekend trips, will be moving slowly from the Nassau County line inward.
If you are doing midtown on Sunday — parade, Rangers, dinner, Broadway — coordinate your logistics in advance. These events do not all end at the same time, and an improvised rideshare pickup on Easter Sunday in midtown is an exercise in patience you did not budget for.
We have done hundreds of runs on holiday weekends. The car will be there when you need it.
