Best Things To Do in NYC This Weekend — September 5–6, 2026
Labor Day weekend is the last big one of the summer, and the city is stacking everything into it. The US Open is deep into its second week in Queens, Carnival week is building toward Monday in Crown Heights, Barclays has a sold-out show Sunday night, and the Mets are home both days. On top of all that, the Port Authority expects more than 2.4 million passengers through JFK, LaGuardia, Newark, and Stewart across the holiday period. If you're heading in from Nassau or Suffolk, the roads and the trains are both going to feel it. Here's what's worth the trip this weekend, and how to get there without the logistics eating your day.
The US Open at Flushing Meadows
This is the biggest ticket in the city right now. The 2026 US Open runs through Sunday, September 13 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, and this weekend sits right in the heart of it. The round of 16 and the quarterfinals play out between Friday and Monday, which means Saturday and Sunday are the weekend sessions where the draw finally gets serious. Day sessions and night sessions both days.
Flushing Meadows is close to Long Island on a map and far from it in practice on a US Open weekend. The Grand Central Parkway backs up in both directions, on-site parking sells out early and costs real money, and the walk from the far lots after a night session that ran past 11 p.m. is not the way anyone wants to end the evening. We drop at the Corona Park entrance, and the driver is back at the agreed spot when the last point is played. If you're going, our US Open car service page covers how we handle the timing on both sessions.
One more thing worth planning around: night sessions do not end when you think they will. A five-set match pushes everything back an hour, sometimes more. A driver who's tracking the match instead of watching a meter run is the whole difference here.
Carnival Weekend in Crown Heights
The West Indian American Day Carnival is the largest Caribbean celebration in North America, and while the big parade is Monday, September 7 on Eastern Parkway, Saturday is when the weekend really starts. Junior Carnival steps off at 9 a.m. from St. John's Place and Kingston Avenue, and YouthFest runs 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Brooklyn Museum at 200 Eastern Parkway. Saturday night brings Panorama, the steel pan competition, with gates at 6 p.m. and the show at 7.
Anyone who has tried to drive into Crown Heights during Carnival week knows the deal. Eastern Parkway and the streets feeding it are closed or restricted, the parking that exists is claimed by people who live there, and it only gets tighter as the weekend goes on. This is a drop-off-and-walk-in situation, full stop. We put you down at the edge of the closures and pick you up somewhere sensible a few blocks out, which is a much better plan than a rideshare driver who has never navigated a parade route trying to find you in the middle of it.
Bring the family for the daytime events. Panorama runs late and the crowd spills out all at once, so have your pickup arranged before you go in.
Don Toliver at Barclays Center
Sunday, September 6, Don Toliver brings the Nitrous Octane World Tour to Barclays Center at 7:30 p.m., with a DJ set from Chase B. It's a Sunday of a long weekend, so nobody has to be up Monday, which is exactly why this one sold the way it did.
Barclays sits on top of Atlantic Terminal, which sounds convenient until you're standing on the platform at midnight with 15,000 other people waiting on a Sunday-night LIRR schedule. Downtown Brooklyn garages around Flatbush and Atlantic fill early and empty slowly on a concert night. For a group coming in from Garden City or Huntington, a car service that drops at the arena door and is waiting on Dean Street when the lights come up costs less aggravation than it sounds like, and often less money than parking plus tolls once you split it.
Mets vs. Giants at Citi Field
If you want something easier, the Mets host the San Francisco Giants both days. First pitch is 4:10 p.m. Saturday and 1:40 p.m. Sunday for the matinee. A holiday-weekend afternoon game in Queens is one of the more relaxed things on this list and a good one for kids.
Citi Field is one of the closer NYC venues for Long Islanders, but the lots are stadium-priced and they take forever to clear after the last out. Worth knowing this weekend: Citi Field and the US Open share the same corner of Flushing Meadows and the same access roads. A 4:10 Saturday game letting out while the US Open night session is arriving is a specific kind of traffic that a driver who knows the area routes around. Being dropped at the gate and picked up on 126th Street instead of sitting in the lot exit line is the entire pitch.
Broadway for a Quieter Night
Not everyone wants a crowd of 20,000. Broadway runs full performance schedules through the holiday weekend, and shows like Hamilton at the Richard Rodgers on West 46th are still the reliable answer for a night in the city that doesn't involve a stadium. Curtain times cluster in the evening, matinees run Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
Midtown theater district parking on a Saturday night is its own separate problem, and it's a bad one. Garages near Times Square run high, the streets around 45th through 48th are gridlocked from 6 p.m. on, and there's no version of driving yourself in that ends well. Drop-off at the theater door means you walk in without hurrying, and the car brings you back to the Island afterward. This is the trip our corporate clients book most often for client entertainment, and there's a reason. See our NYC events transportation page for how we handle theater nights.
The Airport Side of Labor Day Weekend
Everything above assumes you're staying local. Plenty of people aren't. The TSA expects to screen more than 17 million passengers nationally across the holiday period, airports see their heaviest departure day on Friday, and the return rush peaks Monday and Tuesday morning. Roundtrip domestic fares are averaging around $750 this year, up close to 20 percent.
What that means on the ground at JFK: the Van Wyck is slow all weekend, the terminal drop-off lanes back up into the loop road, and the Monday evening arrivals wave is the worst of it. We've done hundreds of JFK runs and we build the pickup around the actual flight, not the scheduled one. If your family is flying back Monday night into Terminal 4 after a delay, the car is still there. That's the whole product. Our JFK car service page has the terminal-by-terminal detail.
Add an extra 30 minutes to whatever you'd normally budget for a departure this weekend. Every year, the people who get burned are the ones who treated Labor Day Friday like a regular Friday.
Getting Around This Weekend
Every event on this list has the same two problems underneath it: getting in is annoying and getting out is worse. Parade closures in Crown Heights, the Grand Central Parkway during US Open sessions, Atlantic Avenue after a Barclays show, the theater district at 10:30 p.m. on a Saturday. None of that is the part of the weekend you want to remember.
We're a Long Island chauffeur service, not a rideshare. Your driver is assigned in advance, knows these routes, and is watching your timing so the car is there when you walk out. No surge pricing on a holiday weekend, no cancellation five minutes before pickup, no stranger you've never met. One call, one text. Done.
