Oscars Night 2026: Watch Parties in NYC and How to Get There from Long Island
The 98th Academy Awards air on Sunday, March 2, 2026. And while Hollywood does the celebrating in Los Angeles, New York City does what it always does — turns it into an event of its own.
If you're heading into Manhattan from Long Island for an Oscars watch party, a screening dinner, or a rooftop event this Sunday, here's how to make the night as smooth as the ceremony.
Where NYC Hosts the Oscars
Oscars Sunday in Manhattan means packed bars and restaurant events across the city. Some of the most popular venues for watch parties include hotel bars in Midtown with big screens, private dining rooms in the West Village with curated menus, and rooftop lounges that turn the broadcast into a full evening production.
Most events start around 6–7 PM EST to catch the red carpet, with the main ceremony beginning at 7 PM. Plan to be at your venue no later than 6:30 if you want a seat before the opening.
Getting There from Long Island
Oscars Sunday is a regular Sunday evening, which means traffic into Manhattan via the LIE and Midtown Tunnel is manageable — but not nothing. From Nassau County, budget about 45–60 minutes. From western Suffolk (Dix Hills, Melville, Huntington), budget 60–75 minutes, depending on your departure time.
Ideal departure time: Leave by 5:00–5:15 PM from Nassau or 4:45 PM from western Suffolk to arrive comfortably by 6:15–6:30 PM.
The Return Trip Is the Challenge
This is where most people underestimate the night. The Oscars typically run until 11:00–11:30 PM EST. Add post-ceremony dinner conversations, a late drink, and you're looking at a midnight or later return from Midtown.
Late Sunday nights out of Manhattan can be unpredictable. Rideshare surge pricing doesn't typically spike the way it does on New Year's Eve, but availability in Midtown at midnight on a Sunday is inconsistent.
Pre-booking a return pickup means your driver is confirmed and ready regardless of when the last award is handed out. No app-checking, no surge surprise at the end of a great night.
Other March Events Worth Planning For
While you're thinking about March transportation, a few other dates worth noting:
St. Patrick's Day — Tuesday, March 17: The NYC parade draws massive crowds to Fifth Avenue. Midtown access becomes complicated in the afternoon. If you're planning any Manhattan trips that day, early arrivals and confirmed return service are essential.
March School Break (select districts): Some Long Island school districts have a mid-March recess distinct from April break. Check your district's calendar — if yours falls the week of March 16, airport departure slots will move quickly.
