Spring Break 2026: Book Your Long Island Airport Transfer Before It's Too Late
Spring break 2026 is closer than it feels. For most Long Island school districts — including those in Nassau and Suffolk County — the April recess falls the week of April 20–24, 2026. That gives you roughly eight weeks to plan, which sounds like plenty of time until you realize how fast the good airport slots disappear.
Here's what you need to know to get ahead of it.
Why Spring Break Is One of Our Busiest Booking Periods
The April school break sends a significant wave of Long Island families to JFK, LGA, and EWR all at once. Popular destinations include Florida (Miami, Orlando, Tampa), the Caribbean (Cancun, Punta Cana, Turks & Caicos), and Europe for families doing spring in London or Rome.
What makes the logistics harder than summer travel:
- Tighter window — Spring break is one week, not six. Almost everyone leaves the same Friday and returns the same Sunday. The departure surge is intense.
- Limited early morning availability — 5–7 AM Friday pickups are the first to go, especially from Great Neck, Manhasset, and Syosset.
- Group coordination — Many families travel with grandparents or other families, requiring multiple vehicles or a larger Sprinter van.
Which Airport Makes Sense for Spring Break?
JFK is the default for Caribbean and transatlantic flights. For April travel, the new Terminal 6 construction means some access points are still affected — your driver needs to know current conditions.
LGA is the fastest option for domestic flights to Florida. For families heading to Orlando or Miami on a morning departure, LGA's proximity from Nassau County is a genuine advantage.
EWR is worth considering for Continental flights and some Caribbean routes. If you're in western Nassau, the drive to Newark can be comparable to JFK and often involves less airport congestion in April.
Vehicle Options for Family Spring Break Travel
Spring break travel almost always involves more luggage than you expect. We recommend:
- Cadillac Escalade or Lincoln Navigator for families of 4–5 with a full complement of checked bags and carry-ons
- Mercedes-Benz Sprinter for larger families, multi-family groups, or extended family travel (up to 12 passengers)
When to Book
For April 18–19 departure dates (the Friday/Saturday before most spring breaks begin), book now. Seriously — these dates fill up in February and early March without exception.
For April 20–25 departures, book within the next two to three weeks.
Return pickups (typically April 26–27) are slightly less congested but still book quickly, especially evening arrivals.
