Traveling with Kids: What to Ask a Car Service Before You Book
Traveling with Kids: What to Ask a Car Service Before You Book
Family trips have a different set of logistics than a solo business trip, and most of it comes down to two things: car seats and luggage. A car service that hasn't thought through either one turns a simple airport run into a stressful scramble in the driveway.
Car Seats: Ask Directly, Don't Assume
New York State law requires car seats for children based on age and weight, the same as if you were driving yourself. A legitimate car service either provides properly installed car seats on request or is upfront that you'll need to bring your own and install it yourself.
Here's what to ask before booking:
Do you provide car seats, or do we need to bring ours? Some services offer infant, convertible, and booster seats on request. Others don't stock them at all. Know which one you're dealing with before the morning of your flight.
How far in advance do you need to know? Car seat requests usually need to be made when you book, not as an afterthought when the driver shows up. If you need a specific seat type — infant carrier, convertible, booster — say so at booking.
Who installs it? A professional car service should have a driver who knows how to properly install a car seat, not hand you a seat and expect you to figure it out curbside with a flight to catch.
If you're bringing your own car seat and traveling by air afterward, factor that into your luggage plan too — a family of four with two car seats, luggage for a week, and a stroller needs a vehicle sized for all of it, not just passenger count.
Luggage Space Is a Real Planning Problem
A sedan comfortably fits two adults and standard luggage. Add two kids, a stroller, a diaper bag, and luggage for a week-long trip, and a sedan runs out of room fast. This is one of the most common mismatches we see — families book based on passenger count and forget that gear takes up as much space as people do.
If your trip involves a stroller, multiple car seats, and full luggage for a family, an SUV is usually the right call over a sedan, and for larger families, a sprinter van solves the space problem entirely.
Timing Matters More With Kids
Getting a family of four out the door and to the airport takes longer than getting one business traveler out the door. Build in extra buffer time, and say so when you book — a car service that knows you're traveling with young kids should plan the pickup time accordingly, not treat it identically to a solo traveler's schedule.
