Getting to the 2026 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills: A Transportation Guide from Long Island

May 19, 2026Rafi

The 2026 U.S. Open Championship returns to Shinnecock Hills Golf Club in Southampton, New York — one of the most respected courses in American golf. Championship rounds run June 18–21, with tens of thousands of fans making the trip east from across Long Island and the tri-state area.

If you are planning to attend, the transportation situation is something you need to understand before you go. There is no general parking at Shinnecock Hills. There is one designated vehicle drop-off zone, and it comes with restrictions that catch a lot of people off guard.

Here is what the USGA's official Fan Information Guide says — and what it means for how you get there.

No Parking at Shinnecock Hills

The USGA is direct about this: there is no general fan parking available on the grounds of Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. All street parking in the surrounding area is enforceable under Town of Southampton ordinances.

General spectator parking is located at the Blue Lot at Calverton Airfield — a site miles from the course, with complimentary shuttle service to the championship grounds. That means if you drive yourself, you are parking at Calverton and taking a shuttle both ways. On a Saturday or Sunday in June, with the Hamptons season in full swing, factor in the shuttle queue on the return trip.

The Rideshare Drop-Off Problem

If you plan to take Uber or Lyft, here is what the official fan guide says about the designated zone:

"Ride share services, passenger, taxi or limousine drop-offs will only be allowed at the designated area located at Stony Brook Southampton, which is a short walk to championship Gate 2. Vehicles must enter the Ride Share & Passenger Drop-Off area via Old Montauk Highway. There will be NO parking or staging for vehicles, so please coordinate pick-up times accordingly."

That last sentence is important. Your ride share driver cannot wait. There is nowhere to stage. If your round runs long — which golf rounds at a major championship often do — you are coordinating a pickup from a zone where vehicles are not permitted to wait.

This is a genuine logistics problem. It is not a minor inconvenience.

Why Hourly Car Service Makes Sense Here

We serve Shinnecock Hills and the Southampton area with hourly service only for U.S. Open dates. Here is why:

Golf rounds do not run on a schedule. A round at the U.S. Open can run 4.5 to 6+ hours. The USGA has a full weather alert protocol — rounds can be suspended for hours and resumed later in the day. Playoff scenarios on Sunday have no fixed end time. A flat-rate car service that commits to picking you up at a specific time cannot honestly keep that commitment at a major championship.

Hourly means your chauffeur is on standby. You text when you are walking out. The car is positioned and ready. There is no scramble, no surge, no staging-zone confusion. You know what you are paying before you leave home.

The drop-off is handled correctly. Your chauffeur knows the approach — Stony Brook Southampton via Old Montauk Highway, near Gate 2. This is not a route a random app driver is navigating for the first time under event traffic pressure.

Getting There from Long Island

Shinnecock Hills is at the eastern end of Southampton on the South Fork — roughly 70 to 100 miles from most Long Island origins depending on where you are starting.

The primary routes:

  • From Nassau County and the South Shore: Take Sunrise Highway (NY-27) east directly. It is the most direct route, but it slows significantly east of Babylon on summer weekends. Build in extra time.
  • From Northern Nassau and the North Shore: Take the LIE (I-495E) to Exit 70, then NY-111 south to Sunrise Highway east through Hampton Bays into Southampton.
  • From Western Suffolk (Dix Hills, Melville, Huntington): LIE east to Exit 70, then Sunrise Highway east. Allow 3+ hours of buffer on Saturday and Sunday — June in the Hamptons is not a light-traffic day.

Note that June 21 — Final Round — is also Father's Day. The combination of championship Sunday and a major holiday weekend means the roads east of Riverhead will be among the most congested of the summer.

Flying In for the Week

If you are flying in for the championship, all three major regional airports serve the Southampton area:

  • Long Island MacArthur (ISP): 44 miles from Shinnecock Hills — the closest option and the easiest connection for daily course transfers during the week.
  • JFK: 78 miles
  • LGA: 85 miles

All three are in our service area. If you are staying in the Hamptons for the week and need airport pickup plus daily transportation to the course, we can coordinate that as part of one hourly booking arrangement.

The Bottom Line

The U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills is one of the most anticipated golf events in recent memory. The venue is exceptional. The logistics, if you do not plan ahead, can undermine the whole day.

No parking at the course. One drop-off zone with no staging. June weekend traffic on Sunrise Highway. These are not small issues — they are the kind of things that turn a great day into a frustrating one if you are improvising.

We have been doing airport transfers and event transportation on Long Island for over 20 years. We know these roads and we know how to manage event logistics so you do not have to think about it.
